We're using the extra day we get from Leap Year to expand upon the cool photo we shared yesterday. Quality and efficiency are the byproducts of the process shown above. With an emphasis on lean methods and QA/QC, pipe that comes out of Cannistraro's fire protection fab shop in Watertown is given a unique ID, labeled and bundled for delivery.

It is a widely accepted safety precaution not to look at the arc of an automated welding machine. It is always important to uphold that rule. Through the magic of photography however, we can share this up-close snapshot of the process of Fire Protection welding. We'll take a look at this process and its machinery again tomorrow...from a wider angle.

Mentoring and community involvement are two major components of the Cannistraro corporate culture. Recently the Cannistraro Fire Protection team (along with others from Locals 12 and 550) helped to ensure the safety of the future tenants of Hyde Park homes. Cannistraro designed and furnished complete CPVC sprinkler system for a four-unit Habitat for Humanity residence. Installation of the fire protection systems served as an invaluable learning tool for the Local 550 sprinklerfitters’ apprenticeship program.

Before fit-out was completed on the laboratory spaces at Genzyme's Biologic Support Center, Cannistraro's prefabricated utility racks were installed as shown above. The implementation, delivery and installation of these racks helped drive the schedule and kept the project team ahead of pace.

The Genzyme Biologics Support Center project could have been a case study for lean mechanical construction methods. Cannistraro modeled and prefabricated custom-built utility racks of laboratory plumbing and medical gas piping. Wheels were welded directly to each rack for easy, mobile delivery and installation. As many as a dozen lines of piping were included on each rack, and each truckload of assemblies accounted for a half-floor of piping.

Cannistraro's commitment to Stand with Haiti and help build the Mirebalais Hospital has been well documented. On a recent visit to the Mirebalais job site, the Cannistraro team installed plumbing and mechanical infrastructure in the future operating rooms. Given certain resource constraints, crafty Plumber's built a useful handsaw out of rebar.

Cannistraro made headlines in 2011, alongside Wentworth Institute of Technology, when it finished the first-of-its-kind student BIM project. Under the leadership of Cannistraro modelers, a team of WIT students developed a comprehensive as-built model the existing campus physical plant. A t the end of the project Cannistraro turned over an fully-functional FM database tied directly to the model. The project was spotlighted at national conferences around the U.S including Phoenix, AZ, Washington D.C., and last week in Orlando, FL.
